Research on the Community: Backpacking in East Harlem (Video Clip)
Description:
In the video clip that accompanies this teaching idea, LMS Myrna Cortes reflects on a collaborative project for primary grade children that takes them into their multicultural community to research what makes a community. At the conclusion of the project, children create a personalized backpack (laminated paper) to hold and display the products of their research. Important aspects of this lesson include developing awareness of one's own community (in this case, East Harlem in NYC) and multicultural appreciation, as students use their information skills to collect information and present their research products.
