Now that we’ve established when we use resources, let’s talk about why it’s important to evaluate resources. 

 

Every time you look for information, you must evaluate the source.  If you found someone attractive, you’d probably try to find out information about that person from others.  If you ask Jim’s mother for information about Jim’s life, it’s highly likely that she would only tell you how smart, funny, and strong Jim is.  On the other hand, if you asked Jane’s ex-boyfriend to describe her, he might tell you that she’s a liar, thief, and lousy kisser.

Would you view this information was complete and unbiased?  Of course not! 

 The same idea is true for seeking information at websites.  For instance, wikis and blogs can be written by anyone in the world who has access to a computer and an internet connection.  Keep this idea in mind as you conduct research for school, work, or your personal life.
