Immigrants arrival at Ellis Island

In social studies, you have been studying the immigration of people from all over the world to Ellis Island in New York.  The travelers were laborers, peasants and artisans, were young and old, and all had the same dreams and hopes of a better life in America.

Did you know that more than 40 percent of us can trace our roots back to ancestors that passed through the doors at Ellis Island?

In this lesson, you will learn more about tracing your family history, called genealogy, and begin researching about members of your family that may have come to the United States through Ellis Island.
