This Just In. . . Periodicals!

Magazines

A magazine is "a periodical for general reading, containing articles on various subjects by different authors" (Young, 1983).

To recognize a magazine, look for:

  • A glossy look to attract the casual reader.
  • Lots of advertising.
  • Short articles (as compared to journals).
  • Lots of photographs.

Many magazines today are itargeted to specific audiences.  There are magazines for people interested in art, business, fishing, or even extreme sports.  And, like newspapers, many of them can be found online too. Some of them, however, may require you to subscribe to them before you can read them online, or before you can retrieve articles from them.  Many school libraries and public libraries have hard copies of these magazines for you to enjoy.
