      Pen Writing on Paper     Uma loved to write. Add the word "write" to your detective sheet next to clue #2. She wrote her first story with green crayon on the wall, but she now admits that it's better to write on paper!
 

Starting when she was five, Uma loved to type stories on her father's typewriter.  Look at a photo of her father's typewriter by clicking here. You might need to scroll down the page to see it. Close the website and come back to this page as soon as you have seen the photograph.

Uma used to hide her typed stories in her house with warning signs saying "Danger" and "Enter at Your Own Risk." I bet that made her family very curious about what was in them!
 
 
When Uma was ten, she started sending some of her writing to children's magazines. Her first poem was published in an Indian magazine called Children's World  when she was thirteen. She loved seeing her work printed! 
 
  
As you may have guessed, Uma also loved to readAdd the word "read" to your detective sheet next to clue #2. She used to read while sitting in a banyan tree with limeade and a pillow. That tree was her perfect hideout and reading spot! 
 
Uma read many different types of books. The more she read, the better she wrote. Why do you think that writers have to be readers too? Think about that before continuing, then move on to Clue # 3.
