  • During the month of February, we take time to integrate lessons steeped in the themes of Black History.  For a number of years I have explored the historical origins of The Drinking Gourd, through literature, music and art.  In 2008, each of my fifth grade classes created a Freedom Quilt comprised of "swatches" they created after reading, listening and discussing how slaves and those who worked to free them, used creative, clandestine ways to find their way north to freedom.
